Struggling with interviews? Most candidates lose the job not because they lack qualifications, but because they fumble the same five questions that come up in almost every interview. Journalism & News Industry

1. Tell me about yourself

This is the most common opening question — and the one most candidates answer badly. Do not recite your whole life story or read out your CV. Instead, give a focused pitch: who you are professionally, your strongest relevant experience, and why you are excited about this role.

Sample answer: "I am an accounting graduate with two years of hands-on experience in bookkeeping and tax preparation. In my last role, I helped reduce filing errors by over 30% by improving our record-keeping process. I am now looking to grow into a bigger finance team like yours, where accuracy and professional standards matter."

Recruitment & Staffing

2. Why should we hire you?

This question tests whether you understand the role and the value you bring. Match your two or three strongest skills directly to what the employer listed in the job advert, and back them up with a brief example.

Sample answer: "You need someone who can manage accounts accurately under tight deadlines. In my previous role I consistently closed monthly accounts on time and caught discrepancies before they became problems. I bring both the technical skill and the discipline this position requires."

3. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Choose strengths that match the job, and always support them with evidence. For the weakness, pick something genuine but not fatal to the role — and show how you are actively improving it. Never say "I have no weakness"; it sounds dishonest.

Sample answer: "My strength is attention to detail — colleagues rely on me to catch errors others miss. My weakness used to be public speaking. I joined a discussion group at work and now I comfortably present our team's monthly reports."

4. Why do you want to work here?

Employers want to know you chose them for a reason, not just any salary. Research the company beforehand: their products, values, reputation and recent news. Connect what you admire to what you can contribute.

Sample answer: "Your organisation is known for developing young professionals, and your work in financial training matches my career direction. I want to grow in a company whose values I share — and I am ready to contribute from day one."

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

With this question, employers check ambition and commitment. Show that your goals align with staying and growing with the company — not with leaving as soon as a better offer appears.

Sample answer: "In five years I see myself as a senior member of this team, having earned professional certification and taken on more responsibility. I want to grow with this organisation and help train the people who join after me."

Final tips before your next interview

1. Practise your answers out loud — not just in your head.

Resumes & Portfolios

2. Research the company and prepare two or three questions to ask them.

3. Arrive early, dress appropriately and greet everyone politely.

4. Keep answers short: about one to two minutes each.

5. End positively — thank the interviewer and express your interest in the role.

Prepare these five answers well and you will handle almost any interview with confidence. For over 100 interview questions with sample answers, check out the Interview Guide Pack from AfriCareers.
